The Vancouver Aquarium is more than a beloved place to visit. It is a self-supporting, non-profit society dedicated to the conservation of aquatic life. Dive a little deeper and you’ll discover they are a global leader in conservation, research and education. For nearly 58 years it’s been their mission to connect people to the natural world through many different conservation, research and education programs. One such program – Ocean Wise™ – works closely with restaurants, including Bishop’s, as well as markets and suppliers to help those partners sell seafood that has been harvested in a sustainable manner.
For more than 50 years, the Aquarium’s Marine Mammal Rescue Centre has been in place to rescue and rehabilitate marine mammals found injured, ill or abandoned until they are healthy enough to be returned to their natural habitats. Earlier this year, the Aquarium became the permanent home to Walter, a sea otter who was blinded and severely injured by a shotgun blast. Wally was rescued and rehabilitated through the dedication and care of passionate volunteers and staff.
You can learn more about all the Aquarium’s programs and the incredible work they do at www.vanaqua.org. The Aquarium receives no ongoing government support for its conservation, research and education work and relies on the generosity of donors and partners to fund these critical programs.
It is an honour to be selected as the recipient organization for one of John Bishop’s Journeys with Heart.
